Bobby Tiedemann

Bobby Tiedemann is Imperial Brass’ Solo Trombone player and the band’s President. He has been with the band since 2010, as a player and also managing a wide variety of band activities.

Bobby studied Music Education at Vanderbilt University and is now an Instrumental Music Teacher.

Bobby has taught music students as young as Kindergarten through 12th grade in general music, guitar/piano, concert band, and marching band classes. In addition to playing with Imperial Brass, Bobby is also Principal Trombone of the New Jersey Wind Symphony.

When asked for a favorite Imperial Brass memory, Bobby’s response was: “I had not played in or even heard brass bands until I joined Imperial Brass, and so I still remember how much I was blown away by the sound of the group when I first joined. Mark Freeh used to make CDs of the major pieces we were rehearsing so that band members could listen to great band performances – those first few months I listened to a lot of Philip Sparke (Year of the Dragon), Eric Leidzén (Postbellum Rhapsody), and Eric Ball (The Triumph of Peace AND Song of Courage – yes we played both pieces that spring!) – I couldn’t get enough! After that, the memories started to pile up: learning about the great brass band composers, listening to great recordings of the top British and European bands, performing with and getting to know fantastic guest artists like Philip Smith, Derek Smith, Joseph Alessi, Charles Baker, Derek Fenstermacher, Warren Vaché, Joseph Turrin, and Torgny Hanson. Some of my favorite memories spending time with the band come from the several ‘Torgny’ weekends with Swedish conductor Torgny Hanson guest conducting great brass band works by Leidzén, Gilbert Vinter, Bruce Broughton, and many others, and of course the long conversations with Torgny, Mark Freeh, and band members that followed at the diner! I was very happy to be a part of the June 2019 Imperial Brass special event ‘A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Mark Freeh.’ The concert brought together the Imperial Brass family from across its nearly 30-year history in one special night and I will always have fond memories of that concert.”
